But this ‘Grudge’ is explained as a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or extreme sorrow. So why don’t we see ghosts and supernatural beings everywhere? Because,
- Throughout the ages, people have died in tragedies, i.e. murder and war
- We don’t think death is a happy moment anyway! Of course we die in sadness or sorrow!
Hereby, the theme behind the story sucks, because it lacks sense.
At the start of the film, we find a young Japanese girl looking after an old lady. But after hearing voices and what not, she goes snooping around the house. If she just did her job, she wouldn’t have died! We’re surprised she was hired to be a caretaker in the first place!
The characters are likewise, just stupid. Karen is also an obsessive snooper, and most of the characters just stick around to watch the curse limp towards them. Even worse, they barely even arm themselves.
Kayako looks scary at times, but she’s annoying, especially with that frog-like croaking sound she makes.
But in the first film, why is she so attached to the house she’s in? We later find out in the ending, and other films that she isn’t confined to it so it’s inconsistent behaviour on her part.
Like the little ghost boy, she’s also useless, because she crawls and limps towards her victims in some parts of the film (giving her victims the chance to run), but then she also has the ability to transport and vanish here and there! So again, her character is inconsistent.
The ending is confusing. Why does Karen get out of the burning house with only some cuts and bruises? And why does Kayako have to come to the hospital to kill her? Kayako had a great chance to kill her in the house because she was right next to her!
Most of all, we’re very surprised to see how Kayako got in the hospital disguised as a nurse in the first place. The doctors and nurses must’ve been blind! They were blind to star in such a sucky film that's for sure.
