The film is based off a book, and it’s about some lucky children who are invited into a chocolate factory to take a tour. They venture throughout the factory, meet small singing workers and even go on a boat ride.
The boat ride of Hell that is! The boat ride is one of the creepiest parts in the films. The classic version of the film even had a scene of a live chicken having its head chopped off, as well as other disturbing yet psychedelic imagery that scared children at the time.
But why on earth would you sit through a boat ride that was going very fast whilst a creepy man sang a creepy song, not telling you where you were going? We would call the police immediately! And just because he’s giving you chocolate, it doesn't mean he’s a decent human being.
Willy Wonka is clearly a psychopath.
His factory for a start has many diabolical chocolates and candy in there, having the potential to shrink humans and bloating them up like a balloon. We’re pretty sure the health and safety department would shut the whole thing down if they saw it! The creepiest thing of all, is that Willy seems to like when young children get hurt or become strangely deformed from his creations. He doesn't care.
In the 2005 version of the film, he’s made extra creepy, being a social recluse who ran off whilst he was a child. In the 1971 version, we’re told he had to fire the human employees because they gave away his secrets. He’s made creepier in the remake.
The Oompa Loompas are strange creatures without a doubt, and when they sing… it makes most of us want to kill ourselves. The 2005 version overdid it with hypnotic yet cheesy tunes that run in our heads afterwards. The creepy thing about Oompa Loompas is that they don’t help a innocent child suddenly, they sing first.
Willy Wonka happily shows people bizarre devices such as the taffy puller, so what other devices do they have in the back? What do they do to the children!
In retrospect, this is not a children’s film. It tells children that:
- You can eat as much chocolate as you can without the fear of cavities, plaque etc.
- It is acceptable to force little people to work all day with hardly any or no pay (slave labour)
- It is acceptable to take candy from strange men (the guy is called Willy for goodness sake!)
We wouldn’t want Willy Wonka hanging around our kids either.
In conclusion, the films sucked more than they could chew.
