Why Cabin In The Woods Sucks

Cabin In The Woods is definitely one movie that twists plots, stories and scenarios compared to your usual horror. But just because it’s a tad unique doesn’t mean we won’t say it sucks.

The plot is basically about a cabin a group of friend stumble upon, not realising that they’re part of a big dirty game where people want to play a bidding game with their lives according to the turn of events.

The trailer is misleading and we, the audience, are made to look like suckers. The film changes its plot so many times. Many argue, that’s the point to the film, but sincerely, I wanted to watch what I thought was coming in the film!

My thoughts before the film: “Wow, some scary masked men will be terrorising some kids in a cabin in the woods. This film will be a good slice-and-dicer!”

My thoughts during the film: “What the Hell?”

My thoughts after the film: “Did I just pay to see this?”

Me after the film.

But so many people like the idea that the plot has so many twists and turns. But really, the twists and turns go from unrealistic to hilarious. For example, a man in the film attempts to jump over a big long canyon on his motorbike. He ends up jumping and gets dismembered by a invisible forcefield! It’s predictable as we see a glimpse of it earlier on, but it’s hilarious. There’s also a elevator that happens to be inside the cabin, and the characters end up finding it to go towards their demise. Who puts an elevator in their cabin?

The characters play to their roles throughout, and even though they don’t follow the usual horror scenarios, it’s still not all that. People play to the hype of these character personalities, especially in online reviews.

It seems that the filmmakers began to run out of creativity as the movie progresses and just began to squash everything into one. Too many monsters start appearing. Some monsters even resemble monsters we’ve seen in previous movies. There’s a ghost that closely resembles the one in Ghostbusters, and there’s a King Cobra that looks like the one off Harry Potter.

In retrospect, we end up finding that this film isn’t really about a cabin whatsoever, because there’s so much more than that. More things happen underground than in the cabin itself.

And this is why the movie sucked itself too.

  2. Why "Cabin In The Woods" sucks:

    1. Terrible writing and acting
    2. Too Joss Whedon-y

I actually like the genre-switching and weirdness *as a concept*... but in execution it's just painfully cheap and cheesy feeling. Whedon was definitely more adept at making corny fantasy TV than movies.

  3. Most of the jokes and the plot were recycled from Joss Whedon's previous works. It was just lazy writing.
